Wonder Woman 1984 Surges, Gal Gadot To Headline Another Installment

A mere two days after Wonder Woman 1984 made both its theatrical and HBO Max debut, Warner Bros. has announced that a third installment in the popular franchise is being fast tracked. Gal Gadot, who has played Diana Prince AKA Wonder Woman is set to reprise her role. Warning: The following contains spoilers for Wonder Woman 1984.

According to a statement from Warner Bros. chairperson Toby Emmerich, Patty Jenkins, who directed the first two films and scripted the second will also be returning in the same compacity.

Furthermore, Emmerich has revealed that the upcoming project will, “conclude the long-planned theatrical trilogy.” The first Wonder Woman picture, released in 2017, grossed more than $800 million at the worldwide box office, and its sequel has racked up similar numbers.

Via Warner Bros., the feature’s opening weekend resulted in $16.7 million in ticket sales (from the 2,100 North American theaters that premiered Wonder Woman 1984 on Christmas Day) and has, so far, accumulated $85 million worldwide.

The viewership resulting from the film’s simultaneous release on HBO Max has been likewise encouraging. Apparently, “nearly half” of the streaming service’s, “first-year platform’s retail subscribers” watched the film on its opening day.

Says WarnerMedia’s direct-to-consumer division head Andy Forsell, “Wonder Woman 1984 broke records and exceeded our expectations across all of our key viewing and subscriber metrics in its first 24 hours on the service, and the interest and momentum we’re seeing indicates this will likely continue well beyond the weekend.”

Wonder Woman 1984, which also starred Chris Pine, Pedro Pascal, and Kristen Wiig, served as a family reunion of sorts as it not only included cameo appearances by Gadot’s husband and their two daughters, but also an appearance by Lynda Carter who played the titular Amazonian heroine in a television series that aired between 1975 and 1979.

In a post-credit sequence, Carter’s character, a legendary Themysciran warrior, was seen rescuing a child from a collapsing pillar.

Wonder Woman 1984’s overwhelming success has seemingly assured a positive future for Warner Media who, soon after revealing plans for WW’s simultaneous theatrical/streaming release, announced that the ENTIRETY of its 2021 film slate (which includes The Matrix 4, Dune, Godzilla vs. Kong, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, and Suicide Squad, would be offered up in a likewise manner.
