It’s been a week since the Doctor Odyssey finale aired on ABC. We’re only calling it a “finale” because we’re still unsure whether it was a season or a series ender for this magical medical / Love Boat-type show that stars Joshua Jackson, Don Johnson, Phillipa Soo, and Sean Teale. So far, Doc Odyssey‘s fate hasn’t been sealed. We just know that it’s not on the fall schedule. Well, comedian John Oliver, host of HBO Max’s Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, recently shared thoughts about this medical miracle of a series, including his love of the show’s slogan, “big deck energy.”

Oliver Wants the Dr. Hot Boat Show Renewed

During a segment in which the comedian broke down some of ABC’s political entanglements with the current presidency, he quickly segued into a diatribe about how what the network should be embarrassed about is not renewing Doctor Odyssey for season two yet.

He referred to the cruise ship series as “sexy ER on a boat” and “The Pitt with sharks.” He also told his viewers how the pilot episode “featured a water slide injury, someone overdosing on shrimp,” among other medically racy happenings and shenanigans.

In addition, Oliver joked about ABC already renewing shows like The Rookie for its “premise-defying eighth season.” If you watched the cop procedural in season seven, it tried really hard to live up to the “rookie” part of the popular show’s title. He also had fun with Will Trent when Oliver questioned its premise: “Despite being dyslexic, he’s become a special agent in the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.”

Simply put, the Emmy-winning host doesn’t understand why “Dr. Hot Boat” isn’t on the schedule yet. The show with the “big deck energy” is in limbo, and the fans are waiting for word as well. According to Deadline’s interview with the head of Disney Television Studios, Eric Schrier, “that decision ultimately lies with Ryan Murphy, whether Ryan wants to continue to do it, and he feels like there’s stories to tell that he feels confident in.” So we might be waiting a while for an answer.
