5. George O’Malley (T.R. Knight)
Everyone was shocked when John Doe, who was brought to the hospital after being hit by a bus, was revealed to actually be George. It was heartbreaking, a big surprise, and George’s fellow doctors couldn’t believe it. But if George had to die, it’s good knowing he did so saving somebody else’s life.

4. Mary Portman (Mandy Moore)
Mary was brought to the hospital so Bailey could perform a colostomy bag reversal surgery. But, in order to have the surgery, she needed a blood transfusion first. However, she ended up being at the hospital on the same day as a shooter.

She managed to survive the hospital shooting and was brought in a few months later to have her surgery, but she ended up not waking up from her surgery. Her death was extremely rare and especially sad considering she had just gone through something so traumatic.

3. Henry Burton (Scott Foley)
Like Mary, Henry’s death was a shock. Henry was first admitted to the hospital because he had Von-Hippel-Lindau syndrome and needed surgery. He ended up marrying Teddy in order to get insurance for the surgery, but it was just one of many medical issues he faced. Henry died during surgery when Teddy found a mass near his heart.

2. Reed Adamson (Nora Zehetner)
Though Reed wasn’t the most beloved doctor that’s ever been on Grey’s Anatomy, her death was the definition of shocking. She was the first person to be killed by Gary Clark, the hospital shooter, and it happened so fast it was hard to process.

1. Mark Sloan (Eric Dane)
Mark seemed to have survived the horrible plane crash that killed Lexie, but he ended up dying from it anyway. He was taken to Seattle after the crash and spent two months slipping away before he woke up. While he seemed to be OK, he then ended up falling into a coma. After 30 days, they decided to turn the life support machines off.
