Top Five Reasons You Should Be Watching Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist

Season 2 of Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist is set to bow on NBC on Jan. 5, and for those who missed this delightful musical gem, there’s still some time to catch up on the first 12 episodes on Hulu before the new season begins.

Reasons To Watch Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist in 2021

Here are some of the top reasons you should be checking out this exceptional musical comedy-drama—one of the best and most original shows from last year.

  1. Unique Premise: Jane Levy plays Zoey Clark, a programmer at a tech firm, who suddenly hears what people are thinking through song after experiencing an earthquake while inside an MRI machine. The stories are incredibly heartwarming with lots of laughter and tears mixed into every episode. Zoey’s relationships with her parents (Peter Gallagher and Elf’s Mary Steenburgen) and boss (Lauren Graham) are multi-layered and provide some of TV’s best “real” conversations this side of This is Us.

  1. A Compelling Love Triangle: Zoey is torn between BFF Max (Skylar Astin) and workmate Simon (John Clarence Stewart), and she shares incredible chemistry with both. They are nice guys (and boy do they have singing chops!) so it’s hard to root against either of them, and Zoey has had a hard time choosing. Watch as you go back and forth between who you want her to end up with.

  1. Alex Newell: For those who didn’t catch Newell on Glee or in his Broadway smash debut as Asaka in Once on this Island, this is one of the most talented singers on our planet! Newell can make you weep with a touching ballad or smile with a joyous rendition of a disco classic. Week after week, Newell delivers.

  1. Supporting Cast is Top-Notch: Even though the show has plenty of star power in its leads, the supporting actors each have fleshed out characters who add a lot to the show—sort of like the townspeople of Gilmore Girls’ Stars Hollow. Michael Thomas Grant and Kapil Talwalkar, who play best friend coders Leif and Tobin, are especially fun to watch week after week. Then there’s Andrew Leeds and Alice Lee as Zoey’s brother and sister-in-law, who are dealing with a lot as they are set to welcome their first child into this world.

  1. It’s Fun: Each episode of Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist features multiple song-and-dance numbers that develop the storyline—most well-known songs that you’ll enjoy. Thanks to a stellar cast and a strong writing team, this show delivers everything one needs to escape the dark and droll times brought on by the pandemic. Even if you are not a fan of musicals, there is so much to like about this show. Check it out, you’ll be glad you did. Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist returns on January 5, 2021.
