Top Five Reasons Why You Need to Be Watching The Good Doctor

Currently a few episodes into Season 4, ABC’s The Good Doctor is one of the best shows on TV today. And if you’re not already watching this fantastic show, we have some reasons why you should be joining everyone else in watching.

Top Five Reasons To Watch The Good Doctor

Here are our top five reasons as to why you should be checking out the doctors of San Jose St. Bonaventure Hospital in 2021.

  1. Freddie Highmore: As acoustic savant Dr. Shaun Murphy, Highmore is delivering one of the best acting jobs on TV week after week. He makes you care about Shaun and his challenges no matter what he says and does, and you root for him whether in the operating room or in his dating life. Anyone who saw Bates Motel understands what a gifted actor the Brit is, and there may not be a more compelling character on TV today.

  1. Diversity Abounds: The Good Doctor may be the most diverse cast on TV, and not just with race and ethnicity, but also with characters of different religions and abilities. There’s Dr. Murphy of course, who is autistic. The main cast includes actors who are Taiwanese, Korean, and African American; characters are Baptist, Agnostic, and one from an orthodox Jewish sect; and they come from different social and economic experiences, which adds to the realism of a diverse hospital setting.

  1. Love: Sure, it’s a medical show and The Good Doctor is great at delivering some powerful medical drama. But there’s also time for some love in the lives of the doctors. Whether it’s Shaun and Lea (Paige Sparo); Dr. Glassman and Debbie (real-life husband and wife Richard Schiff and Sheila Kelley); or the flirty relationship developing between Dr. Alex Park (Will Yun Lee) and Dr. Morgan Reznik (Fiona Gubelmann), there’s plenty of romance worth rooting for.

  1. An Optimistic Future: Yes, the first two episodes of this season dealt with the COVID-19 pandemic, just as many medical shows have, and it did so truthfully showing plenty of the fears and challenges faced by both patients and those in the medical field. But the show’s showrunners decided the rest of the season would be in a more optimistic not-too-far-from-now future, allowing the storylines to take place in a time when COVID is no longer among us. This allows viewers to enjoy their favorite characters and escape from the realities of the world for an hour each week.

  1. Rollercoaster of Emotions: This is a show about a hospital, so there’s plenty of life and death decisions happening every day, and not all of them end positively. The Good Doctor is not afraid to pull punches and has some deeply emotional storylines. But there are plenty of highs as well, as Dr. Murphy and his fellow doctors solve complex problems and change a person’s life forever. It’s a rollercoaster you will want to be on each week! The Good Doctor returns in 2021 on January 11. Check your local listings for airtimes.
