When Episode 5 of the latest season of The Handmaid’s Tale dropped on Hulu a week ago, one didn’t know what to expect, but we did hear that we’d see Serena in a way we never did before — and boy did we ever.

And that was just one moment that had us gasping. Read on for the top five OMG moments from this very unusual episode of The Handmaid’s Tale.

Serena’s New Clothes
When you’re used to seeing a character only wear green for more than two seasons (save for a few flashbacks), seeing her look like a regular part of the 21st century was jarring. Never mind our shock that Gilead allowed her to fly without Fred (Joseph Fiennes) to Canada, but Canada insisted she fit in. And she sure did.

Nobody would have known there was anything highly unusual about this highly unusual woman in a pair of skinny jeans, flip-flop flats, and a cowl-neck sweater. It was an OMG moment for Serena herself — who took it all in — a look back at her former life when she dressed as she pleased, wore her hair down, and had even a little bit of say.

“NO LUKE!” was all we could think when he allowed Serena (Yvonne Strahovski) to hold this baby that all of Gilead is losing its collective minds over. This can’t be happening. WHY would he do this? Serena could easily make a run for it, get back on that plane, and be over the border back in the dystopia of her own creation within minutes.

What do you think? Post a comment!

But then, even more shockingly, she handed the baby back to Luke (O.T. Fagbenle), was offered the opportunity to stay in Canada with no repercussions — and didn’t take it. This was the easiest way to be Nichole’s mother — and her own person, which Serena once was. But nope, Gilead was calling.

Luke’s Phone Call
Perhaps this was more OMG for Luke than it was for the audience as we knew June (Elisabeth Moss) was essentially ordered to call her husband on a state-monitored phone and speak for exactly two minutes only.

But, Luke’s face upon realizing June was on the other end of that Unknown Caller call was everything. He was speaking to his wife for the first time in three years. His confirmation that she was out there just over the border, alive and well. (Relatively, as who can be well in Gilead?)

Propaganda Lessons
