The cast of NBC’s hit drama The West Wing has never been shy about getting political off-camera, and creator Aaron Sorkin has gathered his star-studded ensemble to deliver an important message this election season.
The West Wing stars are raising awareness for When We All Vote, a non-partisan, nonprofit organization co-chaired by Michelle Obama which was founded to increase participation in every election in America.
“This country is based on this idea that the future is an act of our own creation and political participation by everyone is really important,” Bradley Whitfield (Josh) said in a video that Entertainment Weekly posted on its Twitter feed, championing the reunion.
Josh Molina (Will) added that there are places in the world that do not allow their citizens to vote, “so if you have a voice, you must use it.”
But it’s not just a campaign on social media; Variety reported that Rob Lowe (Sam), Dulé Hill (Charlies) Allison Janney (CJ), Janel Moloney (Donna), Richard Schiff (Toby), Whitford and the president himself, Martin Sheen (Bartlett), will reprise their roles for a special live event—”A West Wing Special to Benefit When We All Vote”— to further raise awareness that will appear on HBO Max this fall.
The theatrical staging will be performed under social distancing guidelines at the Orpheum Theater in Los Angeles this October and consist of the “Hartsfield’s Landing” episode from Season 3 of the show and some new material written by Sorkin. Thomas Schlamme will direct and WarnerMedia will make a donation to When We All Vote.
“Our nation is about the citizens who actually roll up their sleeves and get involved, and one of the ways [to do that] that was important on the show and important to us in real life is voting,” Hill told EW. “I think that has resonated with people over the years. And I’m honored to be a part of this campaign to just inspire people to vote. Because if we take our eyes off the prize, the prize will be lost. We have to stay engaged if we want to see ourselves reflected in our country.”
