For his services to music, Sting was dubbed a Commander of the British Empire. In recognition of a very special milestone, he is known today as birthday boy.
Happy Birthday, Sting!
And that’s because he was born on October 2, 1951, in Wallsend, Northumberland, which means that this talented performer is turning 69 years old today! Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner, budding songster, gained his famous nickname during the post-college years he spent as a member of the band Phoenix Jazzmen.
In January 1977, Sting helped form a band which later dubbed themselves The Police. Between 1978 and 1983, they would release five UK chart-topping albums. Their final one, Synchronicity, included the group’s most successful single, Every Breath You Take which was penned by Sting.
He began to slowly establish himself as a solo artist in September 1981, and he released his first solo single in 1982. His first solo album, The Dream of the Blue Turtles, was released in 1985 and within one year, it was certified Triple Platinum. His next two albums — …Nothing Like the Sun and The Soul Cages — went Double Platinum and Platinum respectively.
Sting entered the acting arena in 1979 thanks to Quadrophenia, the film adaption of the same-titled The Who album. He subsequently appeared in features such as Dune (Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen), The Bride (Baron Frankenstein), The Adventures of Baron Munchausen (Heroic Officer), Stormy Monday (Finney) and Julia and Julia (Daniel), and episodes of TV programs like The Smell of Reeves and Mortimer, Ally McBeal, and Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip.
For his musical endeavors, Sting has been awarded 17 Grammys, three Brit Awards, a Golden Globe, and an Emmy. He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (as a member of The Police), made a Kennedy Center Honoree, and he has received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Sting has been married to Trudie Styler since August 20, 1992. Together, the couple has welcomed four children: Brigitte Michael (born January 19, 1984), Jake (born May 24, 1985), Eliot Paulina (born July 30, 1990), and Giacomo Luke (December 17, 1995). Sting also has two other children – Joseph (born November 23, 1976) and Fuchsia Katherine (April 17, 1982) – by his first wife, actress Frances Tomelty.
