It’s been a rollercoaster month for fans of iconic Star Wars bounty hunter Boba Fett, as on the heels of the death of Jeremy Bulloch, the actor who played the character in the original Star Wars trilogy, Disney+ announced a new series, The Book of Boba Fett, would be streaming in 2021.
The series was teased during the post-credit sequence of the finale of Season 2 of The Mandalorian, though fans debated whether Boba Fett would be taking over the storyline of that show in Season 3 or would be getting its own spinoff.
The Mandalorian writer and creator Jon Favreau confirmed on Good Morning America that The Book of Boba Fett would, in fact, be its own show and follow the further adventures of Boba Fett (now played by Temuera Morrison).
“This is actually separate from The Mandalorian Season 3,” the EP shared on the show, adding that filming of the new show has already started. “And then we go into production after that with Season 3 of The Mandalorian, with the main character we know and love [played by Pedro Pascal].”
The popular bounty hunter was re-introduced to the Star Wars universe during the series this season, and revealed what many fans had always hoped — that he survived the fall into the Sarlacc in Return of the Jedi and is very much alive!
The Mandalorian finale set up Boba Fett’s new story perfectly. Now that his debt to Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) is paid, Boba Fett returned to the palace of Jabba the Hut and teams with assassin Fennec Shand (Ming-Na Wen) to kill everyone in the place, except for the Twi’lek pleasure girl, and assume the throne, ready to become the leaders they feel destined to be.
Both Morrison and Wen will reprise their roles in the spinoff, with Favreau serving as executive producer along with Dave Filoni and Robert Rodriguez.
