Celine Dion has entertained millions with her joyful performances of such love songs as the love theme from Titanic, My Heart Will Go On, and other memorable tunes. Sadly, now, the beloved singer’s heart is broken, having suffered an immeasurable loss.
Media outlets including TMZ are reporting that Dion’s mother, Thérèse Tanguay-Dion, AKA “Maman Dion,” 92, died late Thursday after battling some severe health issues including memory loss and hearing impairment.
Thérèse and her late husband, Adhemar, who died in 2003, had 14 children and raised their family in Charlemagne, which is northeast of Montreal. Dion’s mother was instrumental in formulating her famous daughter’s career.
She co-wrote the song that encouraged Dion’s late husband, music manager Rene Angelil, to represent Dion. Sadly, Dion’s mother passed away a mere two days after the four-year anniversary of Angelil’s death and Thursday was also the four-year anniversary of the death of her brother, Daniel.
Thérèse founded the Maman Dion Foundation, which provides school supplies, eyewear, and clothing to disadvantaged children. She also spearheaded her own line of food products, Pâtés de Maman Dion, and was the host of a cooking show for TVA, a Canadian TV network.
Dion shot to popularity when she and Peabo Bryson performed a duet of the theme song to the Disney film Beauty & the Beast in 1991. Her top hits include The Power of Love, Because You Loved Me, and It’s All Coming Back to Me Now.
In 1998, Dion achieved a special recognition when she was spoofed by Ana Gasteyer on Saturday Night Live on the fictional Celine Dion Show. In the sketches, Dion, as played by Gasteyer, would welcome other singers onto her show; they’d perform a duet and Dion would then proceed to blow the other singer out of the water with her superior singing as ‘the greatest singer in the world.’ Entertainment Hub joins Dion’s friends and fans in extending deepest sympathies to the singer and her family.
