Selena Gomez Talks Life Or Death Kidney Transplant In Emotional Interview

 Comments

Last month, Selena Gomez underwent a kidney transplant. The vital organ was donated by her best friend, Francia Raisa.

Gomez and Raisa sat down with Today’s Savannah Guthrie this past week as the young actress tried not to cry while stating that if not for this amazing gift, she would not have lived.

“‘My kidneys were just done,” she said. “That was it.”

The 25-year-old discovered she was afflicted with Lupus in 2015 and that chronic autoimmune disease caused her need for the transplant.

On September 14, Gomez posted a picture of her recovery as Francia Raisa recovered in a bed right next to hers. The two actresses held hands as the photo was taken in the hospital where the surgery took place.

Gomez wrote, “I’m very aware some of my fans had noticed I was laying low for part of the summer and questioning why I wasn’t promoting my new music, which I was extremely proud of.”

She continued, “So, I found out I needed to get a kidney transplant due to my Lupus and was recovering. It was what I needed to do for my overall health. I honestly look forward to sharing with you soon my journey through these past several months as I have always wanted to do with you.”

In the poignant post, this lucky patient thanked her “beautiful friend” who “gave [her] the ultimate gift and sacrifice by donating her kidney…I am incredibly blessed. I love you so much sis.”

Lupus was obviously on this survivor’s mind so she asked her 128 million followers to learn about the disease at the Lupus Research Alliance website.

I’m very aware some of my fans had noticed I was laying low for part of the summer and questioning why I wasn’t promoting my new music, which I was extremely proud of. So I found out I needed to get a kidney transplant due to my Lupus and was recovering. It was what I needed to do for my overall health. I honestly look forward to sharing with you, soon my journey through these past several months as I have always wanted to do with you. Until then I want to publicly thank my family and incredible team of doctors for everything they have done for me prior to and post-surgery. And finally, there aren’t words to describe how I can possibly thank my beautiful friend Francia Raisa. She gave me the ultimate gift and sacrifice by donating her kidney to me. I am incredibly blessed. I love you so much sis. Lupus continues to be very misunderstood but progress is being made.
