How Did Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins Meet?

The two actors met while shooting the movie Bull Durham with Kevin Costner in 1987 and became a couple almost right away. Despite her being 12 years older than him, they had a lot in common — including their liberal political views and interest in social activism. Their baseball comedy was released the following year and became one of the highest-grossing movies of 1988.

Starting a Family
After being in love for a couple of years, the high-profile pair welcomed their first son, John “Jack” Henry, on May 15, 1989. They had their second son, Miles Guthrie, on May 4, 1992.

Dance With Oscar
After working together in Bull Durham and Bob Roberts, they reunited for another movie, Dead Man Walking, in 1995. Robbins directed the film while Sarandon appeared as Sister Helen Prejean opposite Sean Penn. The movie went on to be a critical success and Sarandon won the Academy Award for Best Actress. Not to mention, Robbins was also nominated for Best Director.

Though Sarandon had been married prior to her relationship with Robbins, the couple was never interested in tying the knot throughout their two-decade romance. Sarandon revealed she didn’t want to get married because she didn’t want to take their relationship for granted.

After 23 years together, Sarandon and Robbins announced their breakup via a shared statement in December of 2009. In an interview years later, Sarandon admitted that she reevaluated her life after doing the play, Exit the King [about confronting mortality], and realized things weren’t working. However, despite their split, the former couple has been spotted together with their children since their breakup.
