How Did Johnny Depp and Amber Heard Meet?

The two actors met on the set of the film The Rum Diary back in October of 2009. They were both in other relationships at the time, but they did play love interests in the movie.

Making It Official
After Depp split from his longtime partner Vanessa Paradis and Heard broke up with Tasya van Ree, the pair started their romance in June of 2012. The couple became serious fairy quickly, and Depp reportedly bought the actress a horse as a gift.

Engagement and Wedding
Less than two years after going official, Depp and Heard confirmed their engagement in January of 2014. By February of 2015, the couple was married at Depp’s West Hollywood home before jetting off to his private island, Little Hall’s Pond Cay in the Bahamas, for a big wedding bash. Depp reportedly bought the island for a whopping $3.6 million and the couple’s close friends and family were in attendance.

Parting Ways

It wasn’t long after their first anniversary that the couple announced their separation on May 22, 2016. Heard officially filed for divorce one day later on May 23, 2016, with the news breaking the same night as the premiere for Johnny Depp’s movie Alice Through the Looking Glass.

Domestic Violence Accusations
After filing for divorce, Heard obtained a temporary restraining order against Johnny Depp, claiming he had been both verbally and physically abusive towards her during their marriage. Heard testified about the abuse under oath, but the couple reached a settlement on August 16, 2016. Their divorce was then finalized a few months later in January of 2017.
