Big Little Lies became an instant hit in its first season. And now, the HBO sudsy drama is back for a second season and the show’s already impressive cast has become even more star-studded!

Oscar-winner Meryl Streep is joining the show as Mary Louise Wright, mother of wife-abuser Perry (Alexander Skarsgård), who died in the Season 1 finale.

The cast of Big Little Lies includes Reese Witherspoon as Madeline MacKenzie, Nicole Kidman as Celeste (Mary Louise’s daughter-in-law), Shailene Woodley as Jane Chapman, Lauren Dern as Renata Klein, and Zoë Kravitz as Bonnie Carlson. Witherspoon and Kidman also serve as Big Little Lies’ executive producers.

One of the big story points in Season 2 is Mary Louise coming to town. She has questions about her son Perry’s death. Will the secret that he was abusing his wife, Celeste, come out or not?

“I thought [the show] was an amazing exercise in what we know and what we don’t know about people,” Streep said a press conference for Big Little Lies earlier this year, as to why she signed onto the series. “When I got the chance to join the crew I thought, ‘Yeah!’ I wanted to do it, to be in that world.”

Many fans wanted the show renewed, but it wasn’t a given that that was going to happen. “There was an enormous demand from the audience,” says Kidman. “I’ve never been in something that reached so far, globally.”

David E. Kelley (The Practice, Ally McBeal), Big Little Lies’ creator/executive producer/writer previews that Season 2 will focus on the relationships among the women in the show and that everyone’s goal is to live up to the bar that was set in Season 1.

“We were very unflinching and candid with each other about the [stories] we thought were viable and the ones that we thought [were] not good enough,” says Kelley, adding, tonally, the series will remain “a mix of comedy and drama.”

Since it wasn’t a given that there’d be a Season 2, how does Kelley feel about a possible Season 3? “No such plan, now,” he says.

“That’s what you said last time,” noted Kidman, adding, “There’s no plan for it…specifically. We’re just amazed we can be here [for Season 2].”

Big Little Lies Season 2 premieres Sunday, June 9 at 9 p.m. ET.
