Ozzy Osbourne, Heavy Metal Icon, Celebrates His Birthday

He’s been called many things over the years: The Prince of Darkness, a living legend, and the Godfather of Metal. And now, Ozzy Osbourne has yet another title: birthday boy.

Happy Birthday, Ozzy Osbourne!

And that’s because he was born on December 3, 1948, in Aston, Birmingham, England, which means that this talented showman is turning 72 years old today! After briefly being charmed by the draw of the theater, Osbourne decided to pursue a career in music.

He found great acclaim when he co-founded a band that would later brand themselves Black Sabbath. The group found immediate success upon the release of their eponymous debut album (1970) and its follow up, Paranoid (1970).

Black Sabbath would record a further six albums together, including Vol. 4 (1972), Sabotage (1975), and Never Say Die! (1978), before Osbourne was dismissed from his post. Afterward, Osbourne found equal acclaim as a solo artist. He has since reunited with Black Sabbath and even joined the group during its farewell tour.

Though primarily known for his singing, Osbourne has indeed ventured into the acting field. He made his film debut in the horror-comedy Trick or Treat (1986) – which also featured KISS frontman, Gene Simmons. He also had cameo parts in The Jerky Boys: The Movie (1995), and Austin Powers: Goldmember (2002).

Osbourne has also voiced several animated characters including Fawn in both Gnomeo & Juliet (2011), and Sherlock Gnome (2018), and King Thrash in Trolls World Tour (2020). In the early 2000’s he became a reality television star thanks to his participation in the MTV series The Osbournes.

For his contributions to the music industry, Osbourne has received several awards and honors, including the MTV Europe Music Awards Global Icon Award. He has been inducted into the U.S. Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and into the UK Music Hall of Fame, as both a solo artist and as a member of Black Sabbath. He also has a star on both the Hollywood Walk of Fame and the Birmingham Walk of Stars.

Osbourne has been married to The Talk co-host Sharon Osbourne since July 4, 1982. Together, the couple has welcomed three children: daughters Aimee Rachel (born September 2, 1983) and Kelly Michelle Lee (born October 27, 1984), and a son, Jack Joseph (born November 8, 1985). Osbourne also has three children with his first wife, Thelma Riley: Jessica and Louis, and adopted son, Elliot.
