Night Court, the courtroom comedy that ran on NBC from 1984 to 1992, is reconvening. The peacock network is in the process of developing a revival of the sitcom. Original series star John Larroquette is set to bring back his role as Dan.
The Big Bang Theory’s Melissa Rauch is set to executive produce. Original series star Harry Anderson (Harry) passed away in 2018, so sitting in his chair, says Deadline, will be Harry’s daughter, who takes over presiding during the night shift of a Manhattan arraignment court. The unnamed character (yet to be cast) will try to bring order in the court.
Larroquette won four Primetime Emmys in the category of Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy for his role as prosecutor Dan Fielding. Other cast members from the original include Markie Post (attorney Christine Sullivan), Richard Moll (bailiff Nostradamus ‘Bull’ Shannon), Charles Robinson (court clerk Mac Robinson), and Marsha Warfield (bailiff Rosalind ‘Roz’ Russell). The late Selma Diamond played Selma Hacker and the late Florence Halop played Florence Kleiner.
The revival is written and executive produced by Dan Rubin (The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt) and is based on the original series which was created by Reinhold Weege.
Larroquette’s character’s full name is Reinhold Daniel Fielding Elmore, professionally using the name Daniel R. “Dan” Fielding. In Season 3, Dan revealed his birth name was Reinhold (the same of the show’s creator), but he began using “Dan” so he wouldn’t be embarrassed in school.
Post-Big Bang, Rauch appeared in The Laundromat alongside Oscar-winner Meryl Streep (Big Little Lies). Laroquette’s other credits include The Practice (for which he won a fifth Emmy), Law & Order: SVU, and the short-lived sitcom Happy Family with Christine Baranski (The Good Fight, on which Larroquette recurs as Gavin Firth).
Abby, reportedly, will not be played by Melissa Rauch. No word yet on who Abby’s mom would be, however, Harry’s main love interest on the show was Post’s character. He was also paired with Ellen Foley in Season 2. Karen Austin (St. Elsewhere) appeared in Season 1 as Harry’s love interest Lana Wagner.
