The Real Reason Wendy Williams Made the Move From Radio to Daytime Television

The Wendy Williams Show was groundbreaking for numerous reasons. At the time, no one else on daytime television discussed pop culture subjects. But it wasn’t the career trajectory that Williams envisioned for herself.

Breaking Ground

Williams is speaking out about her career, health, and finances. She revealed why she made the move to daytime television. The blunt television personality admitted that she only “did it for the money.” Williams enjoyed working in the radio industry more. However, she had to change with the times, as talk shows were becoming more popular.

The former radio DJ appeared on The Breakfast Club. “For me, being on TV, I’m not going to lie, that was about money,” Williams said, per PEOPLE. But her heart was always with the radio industry. “To be on radio, to me, is a godsend to me. And I was doing such great stuff on radio.” Unfortunately, she couldn’t bring some of these ideas into the daytime format, which is more family-friendly.

Quashing Rumors

This was Williams’ first-ever interview since she was reportedly diagnosed with dementia in February 2024. She wanted to set the record straight about her medical situation. Williams denied the dementia diagnosis. The One Life to Live alum wanted to inform fans that she’s locked into her conservatorship.

“I am not cognitively impaired, but I feel like I am in prison, you understand what I’m saying,” Williams explained to Charlamagne tha God. “I’m in this place where people who are in their 90s and 80s and their 70s… There’s something wrong with these people here on this floor. I am clearly not.”

Williams wanted to shut down the claims that she was not cognitively impaired. She currently resides at a wellness facility in New York City. Williams can use the phone but can’t access her personal phone and other electronics. The only thing she can do is watch television. During the interview, she shared how much money she has now. “I have $15. I have $15. What does that do? My money is in prison,” she exclaimed. A judge appointed Williams a financial guardian in 2022.
