ABC’s 9-1-1 went all out for the promo of their three-part “Bee-nado” premiere. Killer bees caused havoc on the residents of Los Angeles. However, the last two episodes focused on a plane crash. The showrunner revealed what happened to those killer bees and whether they will return.
Over the summer, ABC teased the epic three-night event of the “Bee-nado” that would storm Los Angeles. Season 8 premiered on Thursday, September 26, with the episode aptly titled “Buzzkill.” A pilot lost control of his small plane, which drove into a swarm of bees. Due to decreased visibility, he collided with a large commercial plane.
Later in the episode, it was revealed that a big rig truck released 22 million killer bees into Los Angeles. The truck also caused a crash on the 4th Street Bridge. The bees swarmed into the cars of passengers who were allergic to bees. Emergency responders rushed to the scene, and a firefighter looked up into the sky, stating, “It’s a bee-nado.”
The storyline gets even more wild. The plot centered around Sergeant Athena Grant (Angela Bassett), who was assigned to escort a criminal from prison. The kicker was that he killed a police officer, but he did his time.
The characters end up on the same flight that crashed into a small plane. The pilot and the co-pilot died immediately. The passengers had to offer each other medical assistance.
Sgnt. Grant had to learn how to land the plane safely, which was the focal point for the remainder of the two-night event. Viewers on social media wondered what happened to the killer bees. Showrunner Tim Minear explained on Facebook that the “Bee-nado” wasn’t his idea. It wasn’t even the original premise of the Season 8 premiere.
“There is an unspoken rule that it’s unwise and disrespectful to advertise airline disasters as big entertainment disasters in the month of September for reasons I should not have to explain,” he wrote.
ABC decided to promote the killer bees instead of the plane crash. The bees weren’t supposed to be the overriding plot. It also doesn’t look like the killer bees are returning. They buzzed off after the second episode.
