As Mulan, she fought off a horde of Hun invaders. As a member of the elite crimebusting syndicate Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., she warded off all matters of cosmic horrors. But now, it’s time for actress Ming-Na Wen to sit back, relax, and celebrate a very special milestone.

Happy Birthday, Ming-Na Wen!

And that’s because she was born on November 20, 1963, in Colane, Portuguese Macau, which means that this much-loved performer is turning 57 years old today! Raised in the suburb of Mt. Lebanon, Pennsylvania, by her mother and step-father, Wen entered the performing arts world in 1985 when she appeared in an episode of Mister Roger’s Neighborhood.

Between 1988 and 1991, Wen played Lien Hughes, the illegitimate daughter of Tom Hughes, on As the World Turns. It seems 1993 proved to be a banner year for Wen, as she made her film debut in Gary O. Bennett’s Rain Without Thunder, landed a starring role in the picture The Joy Luck Club, and appeared in the made-for-TV movie Blind Spot.

Subsequent roles included Mai in the television films All-American Girl (1994), Vanishing Son II (1994), and Vanishing Son IV (1994) as well as the features Terminal Voyage (1994), Hong Kong 97 (1994), and Street Fighter (1994).

In 1995, Wen joined the cast of the NBC medial serial ER, where she played intern Jing-Mei “Deb” Chen. She exited the show prior to its second season, though she did return for an extended stay between the sixth and eleventh seasons (1999-2004).

During the interim, Wen voiced the title character in Disney’s Mulan – a role she would reprise in the 2005 sequel as well as the video game Kingdom Hearts II and the Disney Channel series Sofia the First.

Following her experience with the Disney film, Wen worked on a number of animated projects including The Batman (2004-2005), Phineas and Ferb (2008; 2013), Adventure Time (2012), and Milo Murphy’s Law (2017-2018).

Wen’s other acting credits include recurring roles in Stargate Universe and Eureka, as well as starring parts in Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (in which she played Agent Melinda May), and The Mandalorian.

Wen has been married to her second husband, Eric Michael Zee, since June 16, 1995. Together they have two children: a daughter, Michaela Katlin (born November 21, 2000), and a son, Cooper Dominic (born October 12, 2005). Wen is trilingual and fluent in Cantonese and Mandarin.
