At the time of its finale in 1989, Family Ties family patriarch Michael Gross (Steven) was adamant about not wanting the cast to ever gather for a reunion show, but now, he and most of the rest of the cast are gathering for a very special reason.
Family Ties Reunites
Family Ties cast members are teaming up with Stars in the House for a reunion that will stream exclusively on PEOPLE and PeopleTV social platforms (Facebook and Twitter) on Tuesday, November 10 at 8 p.m. to share memories of their time on the beloved sitcom.
Joining hosts Seth Rudetsky and James Wesley will be Family Ties cast members Gross, Meredith Baxter (Elyse), Michael J. Fox (Alex), Tina Yothers (Jennifer), Marc Price (Irwin “Skippy” Handelman), and Scott Valentine (Nick Moore). Absent from the list of attendees is Justine Bateman (Mallory).
Family Ties debuted on September 22, 1982, and aired its finale on May 14, 1989. The premise of the show was contrasting the lives and experiences of former hippies Steven and Elyse against their children, particularly their conservative son Alex, whose siblings were Mallory, Jennifer, and later, little Andrew (Brian Bonsall).
The show wasn’t on long before Fox emerged as a superstar. The actor’s deft comedic timing and his ability to make Alex simultaneously loveable and frustrating both endeared him to viewers and earned the star three consecutive Primetime Emmys for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series starting in 1987. He also won a Golden Globe for playing Alex in 1989.
Funds raised from this event will benefit the Actors Fund, helping folks in the artistic community with essential needs including money to buy groceries, pay rent, and doctors’ bills.
“During this time of what seems like unending national stress, we find that our audiences are drawn to reunions of what we call ‘comfort TV,’ those TV shows from yesteryear that brought us all so much joy,” said Rudetsky and Wesley. “Some of our most popular episodes featured TV shows like Taxi, Frasier, and Melrose Place, and we have no doubt the Family Ties reunion is going to be one of our most viewed!”
Stars In The House airs new episodes Mondays-Saturdays on both its YouTube channel and its website. You can follow on social media: @StarsInTheHouse, @SethRudetsky and @JamesWesleyNYC to get info on the series.
The Actors Fund COVID-19 Emergency Financial Assistance program has been able to distribute more than $16.7 million to more than 13,800 professionals in the performing arts and entertainment community who have been impacted by the coronavirus. This has helped people in financial crisis pay for basic living expenses such as essential medications, rent, food, utilities and other needs.
