Mia Farrow shot to fame on the nighttime series Peyton Place and garnered more acclaim for her role in the film Rosemary’s Baby. Early on in her career, she was pals with actress Sharon Tate (Valley of the Dolls) and her fiancé, director, Roman Polanski.
Recently, Farrow posted a black and white photo of herself with Tate and Polanski (who directed Farrow in Rosemary’s Baby), captioning it: “[W]ith beautiful soul Sharon Tate & her then fiancé, Roman Polanski.” Of course, the director later was embroiled in scandal, which she goes on to address.
“Im very aware of Roman’s crimes but this photo was taken in a time before that. He and Sharon were deeply in love. I think we were in Paris- we look coldish. Its hard to remember those carefree days and not think of the nightmares that would come.”
Tragically, Tate was brutally murdered along with four others on August 9, 1969, by members of the Charles Manson family in a home she shared with Polanski. Tate was nearly nine months pregnant with Polanski’s son at the time of her murder. Their son did not survive.
Following Tate’s murder, Polanski went back to Europe and continued to direct. In England, he made the film Macbeth. He returned to Hollywood to direct the film Chinatown, which scored 11 Oscars.
In 1977, Polanski was arrested and charged after drugging and raping a 13-year-old girl. He pled guilty to a lesser charge and was expected to be put on probation. He fled to Paris after discovering that the judge was going to impose a prison term and reject the deal.
Polanski has continued to live abroad and direct films including Tess and The Pianist. In 2018, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences expelled him from their ranks.
Farrow is the mother of Ronan Farrow, the journalist, who wrote articles for the New Yorker in 2017 that uncovered allegations that accused Harvey Weinstein of being a sexual abuser. Recently, Weinstein was convicted of two charges related to sexual assaults.
