Beloved Mexican pop singer Jose Jose passed away on Saturday after a battle with pancreatic cancer.
According to The New York Daily News, Jose Jose, born José Rómulo Sosa Ortiz in 1948, had been living in Miami undergoing treatment for cancer since 2018. He was diagnosed with the disease in 2017.
When he began his career, he chose to add the second Jose to his name in honor of his father who passed when the musician was just 17 years old.
“I wanted to honor the memory of my father, who was a great opera singer and died very young, without knowledge of my success,” the singer said in a 2005 Associated Press interview. “Since I inherited his voice, this is recognition of that inheritance.”
Best known for the song El Triste, which soared to popularity in 1970, he was also revered in The United States and received his star on The Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2004. Just last year, Telemundo aired a telenovela based on the singer’s life.
The Mexican legend had a string of other hits, including The Sad Man, Amar y Querer, and Love and Want.
The death has hit the country of Mexico hard, with Mexican president telling reporters this according to NBC News: “He was an extraordinary singer from an era that, with his songs and his romanticism, made a lot of people from my generation cry and be happy.”
Soap Hub sends our deepest condolences to the singer’s family and loved ones.
