Meredith Grey has been through a lot over the course of her 15 years on Grey’s Anatomy. From shootings to bombs to nearly drowning, there’s really nothing she hasn’t been able to come back from. However, she’s also been through several interesting love matches.
Here’s a ranking of all Mer’s (Ellen Pompeo) relationships, from worst to best. And no, we’re not counting random hookups — like the one she had with George O’Malley (T.R. Knight) — or amazing one-off connections — like the one she had with Scott Speedman’s character, Dr. Nick Marsh.
5. Meredith and William
Who could ever forget William (Scott Elrod)?! He worked as a surgical oncologist at Bauer Army Medical Center and met Meredith back in Season 12. He pursued Meredith, but she wasn’t ready to date after Derek’s (Patrick Dempsey) passing.
She finally agreed to go out with him and they ended up sleeping together, but she kicked him out of her room the very next morning. Ultimately Meredith wasn’t over Derek and wasn’t ready to move on with somebody new.
4. Meredith and Nathan
Fans were warming up to the idea of Nathan (Martin Henderson) and Meredith being together, that is until he decided to officially leave her for Megan Hunt (Abigail Spencer). It was nice to see Meredith move on with somebody after Derek’s death, but Nathan was too all over the place to fully commit.
3. Meredith and Finn
Who could ever forget the hot vet?! Finn (Chris O’Donnell), who first appeared in Season 2, was a good guy, but he wasn’t Meredith’s forever person. Plus, he threw a wrench in Meredith’s relationship with Derek, so he’s not necessarily everybody’s favorite character. But, he was a nice person and he treated her well.
2. Meredith and DeLuca
Andrew DeLuca (Giacomo Gianniotti) certainly hasn’t replaced Derek, but he may be the closest thing Meredith’s had to love since Derek’s tragic passing. DeLuca is young, yes, but he’s also kind and he truly cares about Meredith. Despite their age difference, Meredith seems to have a lot of fun with this Italian hunk.
1. Meredith and Derek
McDreamy forever! To be honest, Derek’s death is still so upsetting and hard to process. Meredith and Derek were destined to be together since episode one, so it’s at least good to know they had 11 wonderful seasons together (with a few breakups in between).
From their surprising beginnings to the sweet elevator proposal to having three children, there’s literally nothing these two haven’t been through but unfortunately, they couldn’t handle his death together. Meredith had to go through that alone, and sadly he’s a tough act to follow.
