Like his on-screen alter-ego, Luke Skywalker, Mark Hamill is a guy who fights on the side of good. He recently reached out to a Star Wars fan whom he considers to be a hero.
A young girl named Isabella “Bella” Tadlock, 11, is a big Star Wars fan and was born, according to her family, with a nub at the end of her right arm and with no fingers on her right hand. Thanks to multiple surgeries, she has three fingers and a thumb on her right hand.
Now, thanks to both Hamill and the folks at Open Bionics, Bella has a left bionic arm that has an R2D2 theme. Recently, Bella got to meet screen hero Hamill in a video chat.
“I heard your story on Twitter and just this morning my daughter Chelsea was showing me the video of you with your arm,” Hamill remarked. “Oh, man! That is fantastic!”
The enthusiastic actor added that he had heard that Bella was a Star Wars fan, but told her, “I’m a big fan of yours! They call it a ‘hero arm’ because you really are a hero.”
Hamill gave thanks to Open Bionics for “making this happen & offering hope to so many deserving recipients.” In the video, Hamill introduced Bella to Chelsea and also to his dogs Mabel and Millie. “Give my best to your whole family,” the Jedi Knight added. “May the force be with you, always.”
Hamill’s fans — who already thought the actor was pretty cool — now think even more of the man. “You, sir, are a true mensch,” posted @selecttours_nyc. “The Force is real, and the Force is good,” added @thesidneyclay.
According to Open Bionics, the Hero Arm is “the world’s first medically certified 3D-printed bionic arm, with multi-grip functionality and empowering aesthetics. Engineered and manufactured in Bristol, UK, the Hero Arm is a lightweight and affordable myoelectric prosthesis, available now in the USA, UK, and France for below-elbow amputee adults and children aged eight and above. Welcome to the future, where disabilities are superpowers.”
