Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos have been married for 22 years, which is basically considered an eternity in Hollywood, but they actually broke up right before they tied the knot. In fact, the Riverdale star had to win back the talk show host on the week of their wedding!
While appearing on Watch What Happens Live on Wednesday, February 20, the 47-year-old revealed the couple split right before they were set to elope in Las Vegas back in 1996.
“We both had to meet and do an appearance on Live With Regis and Kathie Lee,” he explained.
“We were pushing furniture for a Queen for the Day Mother’s Day special and when we were together, she wouldn’t talk to me and that made me go crazy.”
But like any man who sees that the woman he loves is slipping through his fingers, he stepped up his game and went after her.
He added, “So I followed her in Central Park. And then we went back to my place, and we got married the next day.”
They ended up getting back together and tying the knot all within one day!
“It wasn’t a big breakup!” Mark stressed.
The actor also shared when he knew Kelly was the woman he wanted to marry after meeting on the set of All My Children where he played Mateo Santos and she played Hayley Vaughan.
“Pretty early on. We would go out with groups of people from work and slowly each date would go that the groups started getting smaller and smaller until it was just us two,” he said.
“I was shy, I wasn’t very aggressive that way. We started dating way before we got together on the show.”
Now the happy couple has three children together — Michael, Lola, and Joaquin — and they couldn’t be happier after two decades together.
