He came into the living rooms of television viewers in the 1970s both as an ensemble member of The Carol Burnett Show and later as Steve Trevor on Wonder Woman. Now, the man who brought those roles to life, Lyle Waggoner, has died at the age of 84.
TMZ reports that Waggoner passed away at his home today where he was surrounded by his wife and sons.
While Waggoner made his impact on screen, he’s also known in Hollywood for founding Star Waggons — those trailers that are used on numerous studio lots and locations as, among other things, dressing rooms for actors.
Before landing his role as a player for seven years on Carol Burnett’s variety show, Waggoner was up for the iconic role of Batman on the TV series that ran from 1966-68. He lost out to Adam West, but Waggoner was destined to take on a role in the DC Superhero Universe! In 1975, he was cast as Steve Trevor in the TV series Wonder Woman, starring Lynda Carter in the title role.
When the series time period moved from World War II into modern-day, Waggoner was cast as Steve Trevor’s son — Steve Trevor, Jr. The heartthrob appeared as the first semi-nude centerfold for Playgirl, too.
In 1995, Waggoner appeared as a fictionalized version of himself in an episode of Cybill, which starred Cybill Shepherd and Christine Baranski. Actress Sharon Lee Jones (Night Court) played Waggoner’s fictional TV wife “Mrs. Lyle Waggoner” in the Cybill episode, which was titled The Cheese Stands Alone.
“He was such a nice man,” Jones tells Entertainment Hub. “Playing Lyle’s ‘wife’ was one of my coolest Hollywood experiences because they had put ‘Mrs. Lyle Waggoner’ on the back of my studio chair and everyone thought I was the real Mrs. Lyle Waggoner! So, I got very special attention that day and real VIP treatment!”
Entertainment Hub sends sincere condolences to Waggoner’s family during this difficult time.
