The producers of Live With Kelly and Ryan were faced with making an emotional decision after the passing this week of legendary actress Cicely Tyson. Hosts Kelly Ripa and Ryan Seacrest had interviewed the Emmy and Tony-winning actress a few days before she passed away.
Live With Kelly and Ryan Honor Cicely Tyson
Would the show go ahead and air the interview? After deliberating, producers opted to air the interview as a tribute to the late, accomplished actress.
“[On] Wednesday, January 27, Kelly and Ryan were honored to have the chance to interview the iconic Cicely Tyson, for a pre-taped show airing…Friday, January 29,” read a statement from the show.
“[T]he Live with Kelly and Ryan team was devastated to learn of her passing. They have decided to proceed and air the show and interview as originally scheduled. The hosts, staff and crew of Live send their deepest condolences to the family, friends and fans of Miss Tyson, and hope that the interview serves as a fitting tribute to this legendary actress,” the statement concluded.
During the interview, Tyson recalled a story she was told that occurred when she was in a baby stroller being pushed by her mother. A stranger told her mother that the baby (Tyson) had a sixth sense and would grow up to take care of her in her old age.
Seacrest says that she was surprised to learn that, as a child, Tyson was very shy. “I was an observer,” Tyson said. “I’d sit at the table and observe everything that was said and/or done. I listened and I learned why people said and did the things that they did.”
Ripa noted that that is one of the reasons Tyson is such an extraordinary actress. Check out the tweet below, which includes part of Tyson’s interview. She appeared on the popular morning show to discuss her memoir Just as I Am: A Memoir, which was released earlier this week.
Tyson’s memoir is available on Amazon now. Live With Kelly and Ryan airs weekdays in syndication. Check local listings for airtimes.
