Perps in the Big Apple can’t catch a break! Capt. Olivia Benson and the rest of the SVU gang are sticking around for another three seasons. That means Law & Order: SVU, which debuted in the previous century — okay, 1999 but still — will become television’s longest-running primetime drama.
Variety announced the news that Law & Order: SVU has been picked up through 2024, and original cast member Mariska Hargitay announced the news on social media. This will take the show into its 24th season.
Previously, the original Law & Order and Gunsmoke were the longest-running TV dramas. The Simpsons is TV’s longest-running primetime series. The animated comedy is currently in its 31st year.
Over the years, cast members have come and gone from the Special Victims Unit. Series lead Hargitay is the only cast member who has been with the show since the beginning. Ice-T (Odafin Tutuola) has been with the show since 2000. The show is a spinoff of Law & Order, which was created by Dick Wolf.
“We tip our cap to Dick Wolf, Mariska Hargitay and the amazing cast and crew of SVU, who now all go into the record book,” said NBC Co-Chairmen Paul Telegdy and George Cheeks in a statement.
“This incredible run is an example of what happens when producers, writers and actors all come together and create a show that, year after year, speaks to its audience in a powerful way. We couldn’t be more proud of this remarkable achievement.”
The renewal not only makes SVU the longest-running primetime TV drama but Olivia Benson will become the female character in a primetime drama series with the most longevity.
“I’m deeply proud to be a part of this groundbreaking show, and humbled to make television history today,” said Hargitay. “The longevity and continued success of SVU is a testament not only to the show’s powerful storytelling and ability to connect with viewers but to its necessity. We have told important stories for 20 years, and we will continue to tell them.”
Wolf added: “As SVU moves into its third decade, Mariska has become an iconic figure as a star, advocate and crusader for women.” Law & Order: SVU airs Thursdays at 10 p.m. on NBC.
