The lawyers for Smollett released a statement prior to this, but after he was named a suspect in the case.
“Like any other citizen, Mr. Smollett enjoys the presumption of innocence, particularly when there has been an investigation like this one where information, both true and false, has been repeatedly leaked,” they said.
“Given these circumstances, we intend to conduct a thorough investigation and to mount an aggressive defense.”
If Jussie is found guilty, he could face up to three years in prison.
As of right now, there has been no official statement released from Fox or Empire. The hit show is shooting its second to last episode of the season this week and Jussie’s role had already been cut down drastically once it was revealed that he turned from victim into a suspect. How his absence will be handled is unknown at this time.
Other repercussions have already begun. TV Line has reported that Jussie’s episode of TNT’s Drop The Mic has been dropped.
