Empire star Jussie Smollett appeared in a Chicago court for the first time for his bond hearing on Thursday, February 21, in connection with charges of disorderly conduct/filing a false police report.
According to CNN’s on-air reporting, the State put forth their case, text messages were read out loud as Jussie, with his family is sitting behind him, reportedly was shaking his head, taking deep breaths, and closing his eyes.
Those texts talked of his putting the threatening letter together, as well as getting the funds, $100, to the two brothers for supplies. They also allegedly show that he directed the brothers about how the attack should go down and was in contact with them an hour before and an hour after the attack.
Bail was set at $100,000, a D Bond (meaning he’ll have to pay 10% or $10,000) and he was asked to surrender his passport.
It was also revealed that Jussie bought drugs (Molly) off one of the brothers.
Smollett turned himself in to police in the wee hours of Thursday morning, which was several hours after felony criminal charges had been approved.
At 9 a.m. Thursday, police held a press conference detailing the evidence in the case and displayed frustration and anger at what they say was a staged attack motivated by the actor being dissatisfied with his salary on the hit show.
