The American Idol top 5 performed songs on Mother’s Day and by the end of night, American learned who the top 3 finalists are for the competition series’ first year on ABC!
American Idol past champion and Grammy winner Carrie Underwood returned to the show, severing as guest mentor to the singers and guest performer.
She sang her hit single Cry Pretty, which she also co-produced and co-wrote.
The Top 5 sang two songs each. Each sang one song that was made famous by Underwood in honor of her return to the show.
The Top 5 and their song choices were: Cade Foehner, who performed Simple Man and Undo it, and Caleb Lee Hutchinson sang Stars in Alabama and So Small.
Also, Gabby Barrett sang I have Nothing and Last Name. Maddie Poppe did renditions of God Only Knows and I Told You So.
Lastly, Michael J. Woodard sang Still I Rise and Flat on the Floor.
After the votes (over 20 million) were tallied up, the top three finalists have been named. They are: Hutchinson, Barrett, and Poppe.
The American Idol judges are Luke Bryan, Lionel Richie, and Katy Perry. The show is hosted by Ryan Seacrest.
The two-night season finale of American Idol airs next Sunday, May 20 from 8 p.m. to 10:01 p.m. and Monday, May 21 from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. on ABC.
