Grey’s Anatomy suffers a hairy start on Thursday as Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) shaves part of her head in anticipation of brain surgery. Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) and Maggie (Kelly McCreary) watch as the doc-turned-patient strive for a daring ‘do.
In the OR, Tom (Greg Germann) picks the Beach Boys’ tune “Fun, Fun, Fun” as he hacks at Shepherd’s huge tumor.
In the gallery, April (Sarah Drew) prays while Arizona (Jessica Capshaw) gets the scoop from Carina (Stefania Spampinato) about her masturbation study that diagnosed Amelia’s tumor.
In recovery, Amelia’s inner voice came out–but only to her. She is intubated and annoyed with all the chatter as colleagues and loved ones speculate how she’s doing.
She’s in terrible pain but can’t get them to understand given she can’t speak, and besides, she’s instructed the staff that, as an addict, she must avoid pain meds.
Meanwhile, Bailey (Chandra Wilson) and Webber (James Pickens Jr.) interview perspective interns, a pathetic bunch. One’s accompanied by her fluffy dog, another whispers her answers, and another admits he lost his virginity at age 18.
In other matters, Jackson (Jesse Williams) returns from his grandfather’s funeral to find out he’s been left a massive fortune. Megan (Abigail Spencer), who has an infection, ripps out her IV to flee so she can fly to her kid only to be surprised by said kid who is delivered to her from Baghdad by Riggs (Martin Henderson).
Back at Amelia’s bed, the patient finally spoke–but only in French, a language she never studied though she did go to a French pre-school. Later, she speaks English again, asking if Meredith has called Derek. Tom believes she has retrograde amnesia which dissipates upon healing.
As she responds to the severe procedure, Amelia is not certain she’s in the clear until DeLuca (Giacomo Gianniotti) LITERALLY brings her the tumor. Owen (Kevin McKidd) arrives to take her home, she says she is going to stay at her sisters but leaves with her estranged husband. Will they make their marriage work? Stay tuned.
