There is no questioning our love for Game of Thrones — after all, we’ve just binged watched the entire series this week (yes, in one week), in the lead-up to the premiere of this new season. In fact, the end of Season 7 had us almost dreading this new episode.
After all, the undead army broke through The Wall — The FREAKING Wall! While people die on this show with an alarming frequency, this moment made it feel like it was inevitable that everyone will die. But until the moment happens, there was plenty to love in the new episode.
Reunions Galore
So many characters who hadn’t seen each other in ages got the chance to be together! Arya (Maisie Williams) and Jon (Kit Harington)! Bran (Isaac Hempstead Wright and Jon! Sam (John Bradley) and Jon! Okay, it was a lot of reunions for Jon — but they were all worth it.
And of course — Tyrion (Peter Dinklage) reunited with his runaway wife, Sansa (Sophie Turner), who left him (and King’s Landing) at the worst possible moment — right after Joffrey’s murder, which they deliciously discussed, leading us to the next awesome section.
Lots of Snark
The one-liners were free-flowing in this episode and it was glorious! Tyrion was on the receiving end for once — when Sansa told him she had once thought of him as the most clever of men, making her the only smart one to realize that Cersei (Lena Headey) lied about sending her army north.
While Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) was odd-woman out amongst the Starks, she did get a good line in when Sansa, worried at how little food they had to feed the addition of the Queen’s army asked what dragons eat. The Mother of Dragons deadpanned, “Whatever they want.” True enough.
A Whole New World
But it wasn’t all wonderful in Westeros — there was also a huge cheese-factor when Dany and Jon took off on dragons (yes, Jon could ride a dragon, shocking no one in the universe except Dany) in what must become a new Targaryen mating ritual.
But in a rare misstep for the show, we had Jon nervous to kiss the Queen in front of her dragons as the two creatures stared at the man kissing their mommy right in front of them. Really, GoT? Sure, we might need a light-hearted moment that felt more like a Disney film than our show!
No worries, plenty more angst coming when Jon learned he’d been kissing (and more) his aunt. Yep, Sam finally did Bran’s dirty work and blurted out the truth to Jon, who took it about as hard as you’d expect — but not as hard as we’re sure Dany will take it when she finds out.
