Now that HBO Max has announced the reboot of Sex and the City in a new 10-episode show called And Just Like That, fans are excited to see Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker), Miranda Hobbes (Cynthia Nixon), and Charlotte York (Kristin Davis) navigate life in New York as 50-somethings.
But there is one elephant-sized notable absence in the new show, as Kim Cattrall will not be returning as fan-favorite Samantha Jones. Here are some ways the show can deal with Samantha not being on the new show.
A Different Country
People move away from the city all the time, and it wouldn’t be shocking for Samantha to have moved to a tropical island or exotic location somewhere. She could still be mentioned and jokes could still be made about her sex life, and if Cattrall ever did an about-face, she could move back in future seasons.
Send Her On A Trip
The show is only 10 episodes long, so it’s likely it won’t cover much ground timewise. If it takes place during the summer, which wouldn’t be out of the ordinary for Sex and the City storylines, you could simply have Samantha vacationing for a month or two somewhere with her new, rich, jet-setting boy-toy.
Reference A Big Disagreement
If there’s one thing we learned from the last four years, it’s that friends and family relationships can be volatile when discussing politics. Without getting into the weeds, Miranda can mention a big fight she and the others had with Samantha that drove her away from their friend group.
Kill Her Off
A drastic measure for sure, but Samantha did deal with breast cancer in the last season, and though it ended on a positive note, Carrie and the girls could pay tribute to her with a Cosmo honoring her death in the opening episode.
Recast Her
While this might go over worse than killing her off, Cattrall herself has suggested this option, and even took to Twitter once saying that Ellen DeGeneres would be perfect in the part when there was talk of a new Sex and the City movie. Besides, would it be out of character for Samantha to have gotten extensive plastic surgery to look younger? Many others have championed bringing in a woman of color to play the role. Still, it’s hard to see anyone else playing the feisty, sex-crazed Samantha Jones.
