Five Fast Facts About Jaime Lannister on Game of Thrones

Jaime Lannister is one of the most complex and interesting characters on Game of Thrones. Though he was definitely hated by most people back in Season 1 — remember when he paralyzed Bran? — he has done his best to redeem himself and be honorable.

Despite his complicated history — and his relationship with his twin sister, Cersei — in recent seasons Jaime (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) has done his best to fight for the right side. Here are five fast facts about the man known as the Kingslayer.

1. Twin Love
Fans of Game of Thrones know Cersei and Jaime Lannister have been in an incestuous relationship for years, but many don’t know it’s gone on so long because of Cersei. In fact, she asked Jaime to join the Kingsguard when he was younger so he’d be forced to stay in King’s Landing and not be allowed to get married.

2. Father of Three
Because of his relationship with Cersei, he is actually the biological father of her three children — Joffrey, Myrcella, and Tommen (and the current pregnancy if she’s telling the truth). This means that none of her children are actually heirs to the Iron Throne.

3. Down Goes the King
Jaime is called the “Kingslayer” because he killed Aerys II Targaryen, AKA the “Mad King,” while he was a member of his Kingsguard. Jaime killed him to protect his father, and he also told Brienne of Tarth that the King wanted to burn the city and kill thousands of innocent people.

4. One-Handed Man
Jaime had his hand cut off back in Season 3 by Locke, who was a leader in the Bolton army. This, of course, affects his ability to fight with a sword, but he eventually learns how to use a sword with his other hand.

5. Disowned
Jaime’s father, Tywin Lannister, reveals in Season 4 that he wants to remove him from the Kingsguard and send him to Casterly Rock so he can rule as a Lord. Jaime rejects the idea and says he’s going to remain in King’s Landing. Tywin agrees to let him stay but also revealed he no longer considers him to be a Lannister.
