Big Little Lies is about five amazing women, but this season it’s really focusing on the complicated marriage between Madeline and Ed, played by Adam Scott. Though Scott has been working in the industry for years, his work on the HBO show is truly great.

From the band he’s been obsessed with for years to finally meeting his idol, here are five fast facts you need to know about Big Little Lies actor Adam Scott.

In the Beginning
Looking at Scott now it’s hard to believe he used to be overweight, but he was. According to Scott, he was not an athletic child and he used to be overweight when he was a preteen. In fact, he used to get called Spanky after the character on the television show, Our Gang.

Comedic Obsession
Scott became obsessed with comedy at a very young age, especially after he was introduced to the work of David Letterman. He religiously watched his show while he was growing up and was fortunate enough to take a tour of Rockefeller Center when he was just 14 years old.

Not only that, Scott launched a podcast in February 2018 called R U Talkin’ R.E.M. Re: Me? — which is all about the career and music of R.E.M.

Galactic-Sized Surprise
Scott revealed during an interview with Kristen Bell on Jimmy Kimmel Live that he was really into Star Wars as a child and even invited Mark Hamill to his second-grade birthday party. Bell then decided to surprise Scott with Hamill, who was waiting backstage to meet Scott.

Breakthrough Role
After years of working in television and guest-starring on a number of different shows, Scott finally landed his breakthrough role on Parks & Recreation as Ben Wyatt in 2010. The show ran for seven seasons and Scott was even nominated for a Critics Choice Award for Best Actor in a Comedy Series.
