Baby, it’s cold outside. Now is the perfect time to sit on the couch and catch up on some classic soapy series you may have missed the first time around. Here are some oldies but goodies.
Scandal
Scandal isn’t exactly an “oldie”. It ran on ABC from 2012-2018 and starred Kerry Washington as Olivia Pope. Olivia is a “fixer” who makes problems disappear for powerful people in DC. She and her team handle crisis after crisis while dealing with their own drama. And there is plenty of it.
Olivia’s relationship with President Grant (Tony Goldwyn) and those in his inner circle make this Shonda Rhimes hit as soapy as can be.
Lost
Soapy may not be the first word you think of when describing Lost. This science fiction adventure drama ran from 2004-2010. It centered around survivors of a plane crash surviving on a mysterious island.
While it does have plenty of supernatural fiction, it also features love stories, intrigue, murders, kidnapping, and plenty of angsty characters. It is a super fun ride that is hard to get off and you need to stay for the finale.
Knots Landing
Now we’re going back, way back. Knots Landing – which can currently be streamed on Amazon Prime – aired from 1979-1992 and was a spinoff of the hit drama, Dallas. The story of Val and Gary Ewing moving to a cul-de-sac in California became a hit on its own.
The stories of their neighbors and friends were nail-biting fun which became more and more dramatic over the years. The weekly cliffhangers kept fans waiting for the next episode with bated breath.
Dynasty
Dynasty was the quintessential nighttime soap of its time. The opulence and wealth of the Carrington family became a symbol of the eighties when it ran through the whole decade from 1981-1989.
It has everything you want from a soap at that time including cheating, lying, drama, fights, big hair, and shoulder pads. It is a campy ride not to be missed. Dynasty was rebooted in 2017 but doesn’t compare to the original.
Beverly Hills, 90210
From classic 80s to classic 90s. Beverly Hills, 90210 was a super hit which ran from 1990-2000. The story of twins Brenda (Shannen Doherty) and Brandon (Jason Priestley) Walsh who moved to Beverly Hills from Minnesota was a nighttime staple. This was appointment TV at its finest. The series began somewhat innocently but through the years tackled issues such as domestic abuse, date rape, infidelity, death, eating disorders, and homophobia.
