Audiences still fondly recall the hit 1996 film The First Wives Club, which starred screen legends Goldie Hawn, Bette Midler, and Diane Keaton. Now, the gang is getting back together!
Deadline reports that the trio of actresses is set to star in the upcoming film Family Jewels. The script, written by Peter Hoare (Down Under Cover), tells the stories of three women (played by Hawn, Midler, and Keaton) who are forced to spend the holidays together along with their children and grandchildren after the man to whom the women were all once married dies suddenly in a New York City department store.
The film is reportedly set to start production sometime this year. Brian Oliver and Bradley Fisher, along with Alan Nevins, are set to produce the highly-anticipated movie.
“The chemistry of Diane, Bette and Goldie is unmatched and irresistible, and I’m thrilled to help reunite them on screen for generations of fans,” says Fischer.
“This movie fits perfectly in our plan to finance and produce four to six major studio theatricals a year and puts movie stars back where they ought to be – on the big screen,” said Oliver.
Adds Nevins: “Brad and I always wanted Peter for this project but he was constantly busy. To our great joy…we were able to get the three of us united. I, and the public, have waited many years for these three ladies to star in another film together.”
The plot of The First Wives Club dealt with three women (Keaton, Midler, and Hawn) who were reunited by the death of a college pal (played by Stockard Channing). The three women helped each other as they sought to rebuild their lives following their respective divorces.
Hawn first came to fame as an ensemble member of the variety show Laugh-In. Midler was nominated for her performance in The Rose. Keaton won the Oscar for Best Actress for playing the title role in Annie Hall.
