Andre Lyon is having a crisis of faith. In a sneak peek from this week’s episode of Empire, the eldest Lyon is pushing aside God amid his battle with cancer.
In the clip, Teri (Meta Golding) comes to visit Andre (Trai Byers) in bed. Not only is Andre’s health slowly declining, but he’s also still reeling from his wife Rhonda’s death, as well as his son’s.
“I’m glad you have the church to lean on, Teri. I don’t feel the same way about God that you do,” he says to her.
Though Andre does believe in God and has been involved with Christianity in the past, he feels as though God has abandoned him.
“I believe in God. In fact, many lifetimes ago, me and God were boys. I loved him. He repaid that love with punishment time and time again.
“This was personal. God took my wife. God took my son. There’s nothing that God can do for me because I don’t want nothing to do with God. Teri, you’re going to have to accept that.”
Rhonda and Andre’s unborn son was killed after she was pushed down the stairs at the end of season 1. She was then killed after Anika threw her off a balcony in Season 2. Not to mention, his stage four cancer isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.
It’s no surprise Andre has decided to let go of his relationship with God, as he’s in a very dark place, but it definitely goes against his feelings about religion in the past. Will Andre find his way back to God and beat this cancer diagnosis? Guess we’ll have to keep tuning in to Empire to find out. Watch a new episode tonight!
