Cookie Lyon can be a force on Empire when she wants to be, but she is also one of the kindest and compassionate mothers to ever walk this earth. She always looks after her children and comforts them when they need her most.

In this emotional flashback video from Season 5, Cookie (Taraji P. Henson) does just that when she comforts an upset Jamal (Jussie Smollett) after his fiancé, Kai Givens, has gone missing.

“I can’t even imagine my life without him,” Jamal tells his mother. Though Cookie is obviously concerned as well for the young man, she offers her son some words of advice.

A Mother’s Love

“You know when I had my heart attack, do you know what kept me alive?” she asked Jamal. “Yeah, of course, my babies did, but it was your father’s face. Knowing I had that kind of love to come back to kept my fighting.” Watch the clip above to see the sweet mother-son moment.
