DC Universe Media has announced that Swamp Thing, the supernatural character created by Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson, is gettting a series on DC’s digital service, which launches later this year.
Swamp Things tells the story of Alec Holland, who was transformed into the tragic character known as the Swamp Thing. Viewers will see Abby Arcane, a CDC researcher, return to her childhood home in Houma, Louisiana in order to investigate a lethal swamp-borne virus.
As powerful forces descend on Houma, Abby will discover that the swamp holds mystical secrets both horrifying and wondrous. There’s also the realization that the potential love of Abby’s life may not be dead after all!
No casting for the show’s been announced but the show will be helmed by James Wan (Atomic Monster), Mark Verheiden, Gary Dauberman, and Michael Clear (Atomic Monster).
The series is written by Mark Verheiden and Gary Dauberman.
Swamp Thing’s been brought to life before, first as a film by director Wes Craven. That version starred Ray Wise (Twin Peaks; The Young and the Restless) as Dr. Alec Holland and Adrienne Barbeau (Maude) as Alice Cable.
The second time was as a syndicated TV series that ran from 1990-93 and starred Mark Lindsay Chapman.
The actual Swamp Thing monster itself was played by the late Dick Durock in both the film and in the TV series.
Don’t be surprised if actors from past incarnations are invited to make appearances on this new digital series. Alas, Durock won’t be one of them. He passed away in 2007 at the age of 72.
