Rachel Bloom, who created and starred in The CW series Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, has experienced both tremendous joy and painful tragedy this week. The star has added to her family and is mourning the loss of a dear colleague and friend.
According to Bloom’s Instagram account, she and her husband, Dan Gregor, have welcomed their first child, a daughter. “She’s here,” Bloom posted. “She’s home.”
Sadly, her joy over the birth of her daughter comes at a time when Bloom’s writing partner, Adam Schlesinger, has passed away from COVID-19. He died on April 1. Schlesinger was both a Grammy and Emmy award winner for his music.
“I have so much to say about Adam Schlesinger that I am at a complete loss for words,” Bloom posted. “He is irreplaceable.” In follow-up Instagram posts, Bloom has posted many photos of herself and Schlesinger from their time on Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.
Schlesinger served as an executive producer on Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, co-authoring numerous songs for the musical series. He won an Emmy last year for Best Original Music and Lyrics for the song Anti-Depressants Are So Not A Big Deal, which he shared with both Bloom and Jack Dolgen.
Co-founder of Fountains of Wayne, Schlesinger was also nominated for an Academy Award for writing the title song to the 1997 Tom Hanks-directed movie, That Thing You Do.
“Having a baby in the NICU during a pandemic while a dear friend was in the hospital 3,000 miles away made this by far the most emotionally intense week of mine and Gregor’s lives,” Bloom shared after her daughter’s delivery.
“As the lovely doctors and nurses helped my daughter get some fluid out of her lungs, we watched the maternity ward around us change hourly to prepare for the upcoming COVID storm.
“The whole family is now home safe and I am just so grateful to all of our medical workers. From those in our NICUs to those directly helping COVID patients like Adam, they are sacrificing so much to fight on the front lines of this war. Thank you thank you thank you.”
