Conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh comments and reports on the latest events that are happening in the world. Now, he’s sharing surprising news — about himself.
On today’s episode of his radio program, according to TMZ, Limbaugh announced that he’s been diagnosed with advanced lung cancer. He added that scheduled treatments will mean he has to be absent from his radio program. He said there will also be times when he won’t be up for hosting his show due to the treatments.
Limbaugh says he first noticed something was amiss on his 69th birthday in January. He went in for some tests and while he considered not revealing the news about his illness, he didn’t want to get rumors started when he began not showing up for his job.
Limbaugh said he’s going to keep working as long as possible. He ended his show today by saying to his followers, “Every day I’m not here I’ll be thinking about you and missing you.”
In addition to a large following, Limbaugh’s had controversy over the years. In 2006, he claimed that Michael J. Fox (Back to the Future; Family Ties), who has Parkinson’s disease, exaggerated the effects of his condition in a political TV advertisement that championed stem cell research. In 2012, Fox said that Limbaugh was using “bullying instincts.”
Along with holding an annual fundraising telethon for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Limbaugh has conducted a scholarship drive to help children of Marines and law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty. Last year, Limbaugh’s radio show promoted a Stand Up for Betsy Ross T-Shirt. Proceeds from sales benefit the Tunnel to Towers Foundation.
Limbaugh has been married four times, had three divorces, and has no children. His current wife is Kathryn Rogers, a party planner. Elton John entertained wedding guests for a reported fee of $1 million, a figure Limbaugh denied.
