He’s played characters that ranged from a stereotypical jock to a man attempting to live his truth in a bigoted world. And now, actor Chris Carmack is about to celebrate a very special milestone.

Happy Birthday, Chris Carmack!

And that’s because he was born on December 22, 1980, in Washington, D.C., which means that this much-beloved star is turning 40 years old today! Though he planned to pursue an Arts degree at New York University’s Tisch School, Carmack decided to try his hand at modeling after being discovered by a scout.

His first campaign was for Abercrombie & Fitch, and afterward, he worked for Lord and Taylor, Macy’s, Target, Who.A.U, Elle (France), Nautica, Guess?, and Cosmogirl. Following a two-year stint in New York City, Carmack relocated to Los Angeles in order to launch his acting career.

In 2000, Carmack made his TV debut in an episode of Strangers with Candy, and in 2003, he landed his first major role: Luke Ward in the teen drama series The O.C. Carmack’s villainous character was responsible for uttering the line most associated with the program, “Welcome to The O.C., bitch!”

Carmack remained with the show for its first full season and recurred during its second. Subsequent credits include the films Bring It On Again (2004), Candy Paint (2005), Love Wrecked (2005), Just My Luck (2006), and Suburban Girl (2007), as well as episodes of Smallville (2005), Jake in Progress (2005), Related (2005-2006), CSI Miami (2007), and Desperate Housewives (2008).

Between 2013 and 2018, Carmack played closeted country music singer Will Lexington on the serial Nashville. Soon after that program’s cancellation, Carmack was cast as Dr. Atticus “Link” Lincoln on the ABC medical serial Grey’s Anatomy, a role he has held ever since.

Carmack’s other work includes the animated films Alpha and Omega (2010) and its sequel, Alpha and Omega 2: A Howliday Adventure (2013), in which he voiced a wolf named Garth, and the video game Final Fantasy Type-0 HD (2015).

Carmack has been married to Erin Slaver since October 2018. Together the couple has welcomed a daughter, Kai (born August 30, 2016).
