She was a cultural icon in the 1970s and ’80s and now Charo has experienced horrible heartbreak. Her husband, Kjell Rasten, tragically died by committing suicide over the weekend at the age of 79.
According to TMZ, police arrived at their home in Beverly Hills at 2 p.m. on Sunday, February 17. Kjell reportedly shot himself… and Charo was inside of their home at the time of the incident. They took Kjell to the hospital, but he was pronounced dead.
Kjell was a TV producer during the ‘70s and the ‘80s, but he became Charo’s manager after they tied the knot in 1978 when she was near the height of her TV fame, courtesy of her appearances as April Lopez on The Love Boat.
They also have a son together named Shel, who was born in 1981. She was previously married to Xavier Cugat, The Rumba King.
Fans took to social media shortly after the tragic news broke to send their condolences to Charo. Many feel like they know the phenomenal Flamenco guitarist, whose trademark “Cuchi Cuchi” endeared her to millions as did to her appearances on reality shows like The Surreal Life, Celebrity Wife Swap, and Dancing With the Stars.
“No… Charo! So sad. RIP husband,” one person tweeted.
Another person wrote “SO TERRIBLE TO HEAR THIS POOR CHARO.”
Charo has yet to comment on the death of her beloved husband. In fact, her last social media post is a video of her onstage performing.
“Hola amigos! This beautiful guitar concierto is called Ruecuerdos de la Alhambra. One of the most beautiful guitar masterpieces ever written,” she captioned the video.
“I hope you like it because also I was playing for you. I love you all, Besos!”
Entertainment Hub’s thoughts and prayers are with Charo during this heartbreaking time.
