Now, you’ve probably heard about the Elf on the Shelf – the adorable north pole cobbler who sits comfortably on your sill and tallies both your naughty and nice behaviors. But have you heard about the newest Internet craze, Celebrity on a Celebrity?
Actress and co-hostess of The Real, Garcelle Beauvais was the first to put her own spin on the holiday tradition when she shared an image featuring a tiny version of herself perched atop the shoulder of singer and former The Voice judge Pharrell Williams – Garcelle on Pharrell.
“You’ve heard of Elf on a Shelf, now get ready for this,” read Beauvais’s Instagram post. Elizabeth Banks was the next to try her hand at the hilarious photoshopped mashup, but with a slight twist. She shared a pic that had Tom Hanks, in character as Forrest Gump, superimposed onto her shoulder – Hanks on Banks.
A plethora of imitators followed. Reese Witherspoon’s contribution featured John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John – or, more specifically, Danny Zuko and Sandy Olsson – rocking out on her shoulder – Grease on Reese. And Mark Ruffalo raised the stakes by “posing” with a mini Tony Stark (as played by Robert Downey, Jr.) – Stark on Mark.
The jovial interactions between actors continued. Jennifer Garner presented Penn (as in Sean) on Jen, and Anne Hathaway gave (Allison) Janney on Annie. Kerry Washington went with a miniature Katy Perry – Perry on Kerry – while Mariah Carey, AKA the Queen of Christmas, played it cute by paring her snapshot with Jim Carrey’s diminutive Grinch – Carrey on Carey.
Quarantine sensation Call Me Kate co-star Leslie Jordan offered (James) Corden on Jordan and Wonder Woman 1984 star Gal Gadot kept it in the DC film family with (Pedro) Pascal on Gal. And Sarah Michelle Gellar may have won when she chimed in with Bestseller on Gellar – a picture depicting her radiant self and a copy of Dan Brown’s novel The Da Vinci Code.
The Elf on the Shelf was brought to prominence via the children’s book of the same name penned by Carol Aebersold and her daughter, Chanda Bell. Its story, told in rhyme, reveals how Santa Claus learns who’s been naughty and nice during the holiday season. And it’s courtesy of a report compiled by dutiful “scout elves,” one of which is included with every book sold.
