A new villain has been added to Batman’s gallery of antagonists — COVID-19. Outlets are reporting that actor Robert Pattison (of Twilight fame), who is playing the Dark Knight, has tested positive for coronavirus, which has temporarily halted production of The Batman.
According to Vanity Fair, Warner Bros., the studio making the film, would not comment on any particular employee’s health status. It did share a statement that reads: “A member of The Batman production has tested positive for COVID-19, and is isolating in accordance with established protocols. Filming is temporarily paused.”
High-placed sources shared with the publication that Pattison is the person who tested positive. Previously, the film had shut down in March when a quarantine lockdown was first put in place.
The Batman is being directed by Matt Reeves (Planet of the Apes) and is set during Batman’s second year of crime-busting as he attempts to get to the bottom of a series of brutal murders. He’s set to encounter The Riddler (Paul Dano), Selina Kyle (Zoë Kravitz) — but this will be before she becomes Catwoman, and also Oswald Cobblepot (Colin Farrell), the man who becomes the Penguin.
Additional cast members include Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner James Gordon, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, Batman’s butler, and John Turturro, who will bring to life gangster Carmine Falcone, a character first introduced in the Frank Miller/David Mazzucchelli story Batman: Year One.
“It’s a criminological experiment,” Reeves said at a recent DC FanDome event. “He’s trying to figure out what he can do to finally change this place. You see that he’s charting what he’s doing, and he’s seeing he isn’t having any of the effect that he wants to have yet. The murders start to happen, and the murders start to describe a history of Gotham. It only reinforces what he knows about Gotham, but opens up a whole world of corruption that went much further.” The Batman is scheduled for release in 2021.
