Tonight’s episode of This Is Us is a must-see for fans of Randall and Beth. The couple is going to deal with some lingering issues that have plagued their dynamic for years. Will their marriage survive?
As viewers saw in last week’s episode, Randall (Sterling K. Brown) left a tersely-worded message for Beth (Susan Kelechi Watson), thinking she was not going to show up for an important business dinner.
But Beth did show up and she heard Randall’s message. Uh-oh! Now, she’s got one of her own to deliver: she’s tired of not fulfilling her own dreams!
“We’re looking at [Beth and Randall’s] relationship, which is a ‘goal’ relationship and marriage, and we put it through the biggest test it’s ever had,” Dan Fogelman, the show’s creator, tells TV Insider.
Fogelman notes that Beth and Randall have hit an impasse because they stopped properly talking to one another.
“When you don’t communicate and you let things fester, you make mistakes,” Fogelman notes.
Tonight’s episode is jam-packed with flashbacks and viewers will get to see Beth and Randall’s wedding ceremony. While Phylicia Rashad won’t be reprising her role as Carol, Beth’s mom, for this episode, the show is hoping to get her back for some appearances next year.
“My hope is that she’ll want to come back and be part of our ensemble,” Fogelman says.
The question remains as to whether or not Beth and Randall’s marriage survives. One thing’s for sure — fans want them to make it!
“These episodes are a turning point for Randall and Beth,” Kelechi Watson says. “It’s exciting doing this show, especially with Sterling, who brings his all to everything he does.”
There will be one more show to close out Season 3 after tonight’s penultimate installment. Watch for questions to be answered and cliffhangers to be presented as This Is Us has its season finale on Tuesday, April 2 in an episode titled “Her.”
This Is Us airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. on NBC.
