The first season ABC’s version of American Idol is getting closer to crowning its inaugural winner! After narrowing the competition down to seven, the show went one more step further when Sunday’s competition revealed the top five!
The sensational seven performed two songs each this week for judges Luke Bryan, Katie Perry, and Lionel Richie as they battled for America’s vote to make it to the final five!
The show is hosted by TV’s busiest man – Ryan Seacrest!
On Sunday’s show, singers paid tribute to the Prince, each performing one of the late singer’s songs. Mentoring the contenders was none other than Nick Jonas! Also, Sheila E., who had toured with Prince in the early days of her career, performed with the show’s band as part of the tribute to Prince.
In addition to each contender singing a song made famous by Prince, they also chose one that was famous the year they were born.
Because the show aired live throughout the country, everyone across America had a chance to vote for the top five.
Jurnee was up first and sang Prince’s son Kiss followed by Gabby Barrett performing I Hope You Dance, which was released the year she was born. Next, Michael J. Woodard performed Prince’s I Would Die For You.
Cade Foehner sang Who Will Save Your Soul, which debuted the year she came into the world. Next, Catie Turner performed Oops…I Did it Again. After that, Caleb Lee Hutchinson sang Amazed, the tune made famous by Lonestar.
Maddie Poppe performed the Prince song Nothing Compares to U and also played the piano. Next up was Woodard again singing My Heart Will Go On, in honor of the year he was born.
Foehner was back on stage to sing Jungle Love for his Prince song. Then, Barrett returned to sing the Prince tune How Come U Don’t Call Me Anymore? After that, Jurnee sang Back at One, which was her mom and dad’s…continue reading on the next page —>
Foehner was back on stage to sing Jungle Love for his Prince song. Then, Barrett returned to sing the Prince tune How Come U Don’t Call Me Anymore? After that, Jurnee sang Back at One, which was her mom and dad’s wedding song.
Turner sang song Manic Monday as her Prince song, alas, forgetting a lyric, but she did her best to rebound. Poppe accompanied herself on the guitar to sing the Sheryl Crow tune If It Makes You Happy.
The last song of the night was Hutchinson performing the iconic Prince tune When Doves Cry.
Once voting was complete the results were read: Woodward, Hutchinson, Foehner, Barrett, and Poppe are now the final five. Alas, Jurnee and Turner were sent home, but the good news is that all seven will be on hand for this summer’s American Idol tour.
