Mom’s Bonnie Plunkett has much to celebrate, including the fact that her daughter has gotten into Georgetown Law School. Meanwhile, actress Allison Janney has a milestone all her own to fete.
Happy Birthday, Allison Janney!
And that’s because she was born on November 19, 1959, in Boston, Massachusetts, which means that this much-beloved performer is turning 61 years old today! Janney initially aspired to become a competitive figure skater, but her tall stature and an injury in her youth caused her to explore other avenues.
While attending Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio, Janney came under the tutelage of Hollywood luminaires Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward, who encouraged her enthusiasm for acting.
After graduating from college with a degree in theatre, Janney briefly trained at the famed Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre in New York before receiving a scholarship to study at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in the summer of 1984.
Janney made both her professional stage and on-camera debut in 1989 in the Off-Broadway production of Ladies and the Sandra Bullock vehicle Who Shot Patakango? respectively.
Over the next few years, Janney would appear in a plethora of film and television productions, usually in a minor or uncredited role. Among her silver screen efforts were Wolf (1994), The Ice Storm (1997), and The Object of My Affection (1998).
Janney’s first television part was the short-lived black-and-white comedy series Morton & Hayes. Subsequently, she appeared in episodes of Law & Order (1992; 1994), New York Undercover (1995), and Aliens in the Family (1996).
After a brief stint on As the World Turns (where she played Viv Kaminski), Janney spent three years at Guiding Light, in a recurring capacity, as the acerbic maid, Ginger (1993-1995), at the Spaulding mansion.
In 1999, Janney accepted the opportunity to portray White House Press Secretary C.J. Cregg in the NBC political drama series The West Wing; she would maintain the role for seven seasons and receive four Primetime Emmy Awards for her work.
Afterward, Janney guest-starred on series such as Two and a Half Men (2007), Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip (2007), Lost (2010), In Plain Sight (2010), and The Big C (2012). She also appeared in features like Hairspray (2007), Juno (2007), and Pretty Ugly People (2008).
Janney has played Bonnie Plunkett, a self-centered, curmudgeonly recovering addict, on the sitcom Mom since 2013. For her performance, Janney has been awarded two Primetime Emmy Awards in the Outstanding Supporting Actress In a Comedy Series category.
Between 2014 and 2016, Janney had a recurring role in the period drama Masters of Sex, which netted her a further Primetime Emmy. In 2017, Janney nabbed the Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for her work in the film I, Tonya.
